Animales natives to the Balearic Islands

Black Mallorquin Pig We have a number of Black Mallorquin pigs here in Rancho and we bred them. In our restaurant we offer the meat as a specialty of the house.

These animals are gentle, medium size and native to the Mallorcan countryside. The head is thin and the profile shows a concaved nose. The neck is short and thick. All four legs are thin and relatively short. The hooves are black.

Mallorquin Goat There are various colours of Mallorquin goat, sometimes they brown and sometimes beige, black or white, it is the most characteristic animal of Mallorca’s mountain range.

Menorquin Horse On the island we have a number of this breed. Black in colour, their most striking characteristic most striking is its beautiful thick black mane, which always shines. The horses are used in many of the Fiesta’s in Menorca, possibly the most famous is those of San Juan. They rear up and dance on their two hind legs during these festivities.

The head is long and square. The ears are large and mobile. The front legs are more robust than the back ones and the hoofs are thin.
The Donkey is usually black with grey/white markings around the eyes, mouth, chest and stomach. Mallorquin Donkey  An animal very typical in the past years and centuries in Mallorca, it was customary for every family to have one.  Used as a means of transporting people and things. It is said that the animal is stubborn and able to carry large amounts of weight.

Animales from other regions

Pony ideal for the younger children to ride.

French Trotters are our breed of horses. They are known for their strength and resistance. Some of our own horses have competed in some of the most famous and important trotting races in France and a most have descended from this bloodline being born and bred here in the Ranch.

llama is a domesticated South American camelid, widely used as a meat and pack animal by Andean cultures since pre-Hispanic times.

The height of a full-grown, full-size llama is 1.7 to 1.8 m (5.5 to 6.0 ft) tall at the top of the head, and can weigh between 130 to 200 kilograms (280 to 450 lb). At birth, a baby llama (called a cria) can weigh between 9 and 14 kilograms (20 and 30 lb). Llamas can live for a period of about 20–30 years depending on how well they are taken care of. Llamas are very social animals and live with other llamas as a herd. The wool produced by a llama is very soft and lanolin-free. Llamas are intelligent and can learn simple tasks after a few repetitions. Our llamas have adapted to living in Mallorca, but when they get angry, beware as they like to spit!

Wild Boar The body of the Boar is very solid and is covered with coarse hair. The legs are short and strong. The males have upper canines which form tusks and the lower ones are razor sharp. They can weigh up to 300 kg. In Spain they are found mostly in the North and central areas (Andalucía and Cataluña)

Ostrich The ostrich is the world's largest living bird and is flightless, however it can run up to speeds of 40 mph. An ostrich can live to be about 70 years old and can weigh from 250 to 400 pounds and stand 2 tall.

Black Swan
The Black Swan has a body length of up to 142 cm, with the females being smaller than the males. In adults, the body is mostly black. The bill is a deep orange-red, paler at the tip, with a distinct narrow white band towards the end.

Guinea Pig A guinea pig is a kind of rodent like a mouse or rat. Many years ago guinea pigs only lived in south America, however visitors to South America returned with them and they have since spread all over the world as pets. They are shy and spend a lot of time hiding. In the wild they live in long grass or other animals abandoned burrows.

Exotic Animals

Tamarins are inhabitants of tropical rainforests and open forest areas. Different Tamarin species vary considerably in appearance, ranging from nearly all black through mixtures of black, brown and white. Mustache-like facial hairs are typical for many species. Their body size ranges from 13 to 30 cm (plus a 25 to 44 cm long tail) and they weigh from 220 to 900 grams. Tamarins differ from marmosets primarily in having lower canine teeth that are clearly longer than the incisors. In captivity, Tamarins can live for up to 18 years. Tamarins are omnivores, eating fruits and other plants as well as spiders, insects, small vertebrates and bird eggs.

Marmoset Most marmosets are about 20 cms (8 in) long. Relative to other monkeys, they show some apparently primitive features: they have claws rather than nails, and tactile hairs on their wrists. They lack wisdom teeth, and their brain layout seems to be relatively primitive. Their body temperature is unusually variable, changing by up to 4 °C (7 °F) in a day. Marmosets are native to South America and have been found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.

Parrots Macaws, red, primarily green, or turquoise and yellow, they are favorites for our visitors to the Ranch, and they talk!!

Cockatoo Or little cockatoo has a soft white plumage which combines well with her characteristic, yellow crest.
